Customer Review: A solidly built performer

It's rare to find a well-built appliance anymore. This is an old-fashioned toaster, heavy, well-built, well-designed, and it works. The controls are intuitive and responsive; when you push the bread down you feel the right amount of resistance and control, not a flimsy spring that may or may not catch.
When the bread pops back up it is evenly toasted on both sides, from edge to edge, to the exact degree you stipulated on the dial. You could shoot a bread commercial using your morning toast. At first, it surprised me that, when the bread popped up, it stayed fairly low into the toaster, making it necessary to grasp it with those little bread wooden tongs I'd never had to use before. I came to understand that this keeps the bread evenly warm and crisp until you remove it, and it's one more thing to appreciate.
Granted, this toaster is a bit more expensive than many of the conventional (non-gourmet catalog) toasters, but the point is that it works well and the others don't. I expect years of service from this toaster. It is 'cheaper' in the long run, to buy good and lasting quality. You save on replacement costs and avoid daily frustrations.
You would think that making a toaster shouldn't be rocket science but, judging from my previous cheaper (but known brand) toasters, apparently it is. The toast had a different tan on each side and uneven areas on the same side, including the occasional charred edges which needed to be scraped off. I could never find the "just right" setting and the results were random. As a matter of fact, when toasting several batches, I had to keep lowering the controls because the toasts kept getting progressively darker. Not so with the Waring, I can put in two slices on each side, set the same settings, and get all four slices of bread with matching tans. Repeats of the process also match the first batch and each other.
It has a cancel button and a bagel setting that I still haven't tried. I wasn't aware that there is one right way to toast a bagel, but now that I know, I will have to try it.
The only minus is that it is a bit wider than I would have liked, (it takes up more width but has less depth than my two old 2-slice toasters) but I don't regret rearranging the entire work area to accommodate it, I finally have a frustration-free toaster and it's a keeper!
